VietCALL international conference at IUH: bringing AI into language teaching and learning 18-10-2025

The Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City (IUH) proudly hosted for the first time the VietCALL International Scientific Conference — a prestigious academic event focusing on the application of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in language teaching and learning.

Organized by the Vietnam Association for Computer-Assisted Language Learning (VietCALL) under the Linguistics Association of Vietnam, in collaboration with the Faculty of Foreign Languages, IUH, the first VietCALL Conference (2025) received over 83 abstracts from 156 authors in Vietnam and abroad, reflecting the strong global interest in AI applications in language education.

Under the theme “Enhancing Pedagogical Strategies for AI-Integrated Language Education,” the conference was held on October 18, 2025, at IUH, gathering many lecturers, researchers, and experts from Vietnam and abroad to share the latest research findings and trends in technology-assisted language education.

The event attracted over 500 participants, including academics, educators, researchers, and students from the United States, Sweden, China, Indonesia, Australia, Singapore, and Vietnam.

At the first VietCALL Conference, participants engaged with in-depth research presentations on the following subthemes:

  • Innovations and emerging trends in language teaching and learning;
  • Theoretical and practical advances in linguistics;
  • Advances in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL);
  • Application and assessment of AI tools in language education;
  • Effective integration and evaluation of technological innovation in classrooms.
  • Pedagogical challenges and solutions in AI-enhanced language learning.

The Organizing Committee received over 83 abstracts from 156 authors, with selected full papers to be published in the Conference Proceedings or the International Journal of AI in Language Education (https://ijaile.org).

In addition to plenary sessions, the event featured parallel sessions and open discussions involving international experts, focusing on the future of language education in the Industry 4.0 era.

Several virtual sessions also connected global participants, providing opportunities for both local and international academic communities to engage and collaborate.

Delivering his remarks, Dr. Nguyễn Xuân Hồng – Vice Rector of the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized: “In the digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education by enabling personalized learning, innovative teaching methods, and improved training quality. Researching, sharing, and applying AI in language education is not only a trend but also a necessary step for education to align with global development.”

Keynote speakers included:

  • Prof. Dr. Beverly Park Woolf (University of Massachusetts–Amherst, USA): “Emotion Sensitive Second Language Intelligent Tutors”
  • Dr. Deborah Healey (University of Oregon, USA): “Culturally Relevant Images: Pixabay, AI, and Phones”
  • Ms. Anisia Katinskaia (Senior Data Scientist, Swiss Data Science Center – EPFL, University of Helsinki, Finland): “When More Than One Answer is Correct: Lessons for AI in Education”
  • Dr. Bin Zou (Senior Associate Professor, Xi’an Jiaotong–Liverpool University, China): “Using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) to Enhance EFL Learning and Teaching”

Additionally, Dr. Willy A. Renandya (NIE–NTU, SUSS & RELC, Singapore) delivered an insightful plenary talk on “Pedagogy as the Foundation, Technology as the Supportive Tool.”

The first VietCALL Conference marked a significant milestone in promoting innovation and international collaboration in the field of language education and technology.

The event aimed to establish a dynamic international academic platform where scholars, educators, technologists, and policymakers could exchange knowledge, share research, discuss practical insights, and identify opportunities and challenges in integrating AI into modern language teaching and learning.
