ABET experts conduct test visits at the institution

ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) is an accrediting organization for engineering and technology training founded in 1932 by American industry associations. It is a prestigious accrediting organization in the international community, recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), which consists of the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC), the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) and the Applied Scientific Accreditation Commission (ASAC). The programs accredited by ABET are the ones in engineering, technology, computing, applied sciences, corresponding to the above-listed committees. A program may have to be accredited by two different committees, if the program name contains words referring to two different areas.

ABET's accreditation criteria include general and specific criteria for each program. Specifically, there are 9 criteria: (1) Student, (2) Educational Objectives of the program, (3) Expected Outcomes, (4) Continuous Improvement, (5) Program, (6), Faculty, (7) Facilities, (8) Support, (9) Criteria of each program.

ABET's accreditation process for a program includes the following basic steps: ABET consultants review the self-assessment documentation of the accredited training institution; ABET experts conduct a test visit at the training facility, review all materials, subjects, laboratories, meet with managers, lecturers, students, alumni, businesses ... A group of ABET experts come to the training facility to officially inspect the program; after being granted, ABET certificate will be maintained for subsequent years under ABET's observation in accordance with the the training institution’s wish.

Unlike the assessment and accreditation according to the level of response from 1-7 (by AUN-QA or domestic accreditation), in order to be recognized by ABET to meet the highest level of accreditation (6 years), training programs need to meet 100% of the criteria required by ABET. If there are any criteria of the training program that do not meet the requirements of ABET, the program is considered uncredited or may only be considered for temporary conditional recognition at a maximum of 2 years.
